This series revolves around an artist named Mutsuo who tattoos at the world-famous Three Tides Tattoo in Osaka, Japan. Mutsuo went from being one of the shop's first customers to its first apprentice, and now he is considered its most senior tattoo artist. He learned the trade from all the American tattoo masters who visited Three Tides, and got what Chris Garver calls “a 90s-style tattoo education.” Enjoy.

When we got home from vacation, I had the lovely surprise of finding The Face Issue of the UK's Things & Ink magazine, a publication that I described in my first post on it as "a love letter to tattooed women."

Tattoo Nation Release 4.4.13

Last night, the much-anticipated "Tattoo Nation," a documentary on the history and evolution of black & grey tattooing, premiered in Los Angeles, complete with a red carpet laid out for tattooing's own A List, including Don Ed Hardy, Jack Rudy, Freddy Negrete, Good Time Charlie Cartwright, Tim Hendricks, and Cory Miller (who narrated the film), among many others.

NYC Tattoo Convention May 17-19

We're gearing up for the NYC Tattoo Convention, May 17-19, at the Roseland Ballroom in the heart of Times Square. It remains one of our favorite shows because of the finely curated roster of international artists, the fantastic stage show performers, and because we get to see our traveling freakshow of friends who come into NYC specifically to be a part of this convention.  

This will be my 13th year attending the show, and the first time I won't be working it for a long time, so I can run around, watch the amazing art work being created, shop(!), and yup, hang at the bar. You'll see us floating around Saturday and Sunday. I'll have N+S stickers, pins, and bear hugs.

Modificação Cultural - As mulheres da Tribo Apatani

A tribo Apatani é uma tribo de cerca de 60 mil membros no planalto da Índia. A tribo é conhecida principalmente pelos grandes alargadores que as mulheres mais velhas da tribo usam nas cartilagens de seus narizes. Os alargadores das mulheres Apatni começaram a ser usados para proteger as mulheres, que no passado eram conhecidas como as mais belas entre as tribos Arunachal e por isso eram constantemente sequestradas pelas outras tribos. Por meio dos alargadores e de uma tatuagem no rosto (1 linha vertical da testa até o nariz e 5 linhas no queixo) as mulheres Apatani pretendiam se tornar menos atraentes para as outras tribos Arunachal.
A prática dos alargadores das mulheres Apatani está caindo em desuso nas últimas décadas e hoje em dia somente as mulheres Apatani mais velhas tem os alargadores e todas as mulheres nascidas a partir de 1970 não usam mais os alargadores.

Dica de livro: Corpo ao Extremo

A dica de livro de hoje é uma interessante obra jornalística, intitulada “Corpo ao extremo – A nova face de uma cultura modificada“. A obra pode ser considerada a primeira do gênero a abordar jornalisticamente a cena da modificação corporal ‘extrema’ no Brasil, e mostra um pouco do cotidiano, como são vistas e como se sentem as pessoas que alteram seus corpos por meio de intervenções levadas a um nível mais extremo do que os já conhecidos e popularizados piercings e tatuagens.

Gregorio Marangoni é um paranaense, erradicado em São Paulo que vem chamando a atenção devido à sua especialidade no mundo da tatuagem: Pontilhismo Tattoo. Designer de formação, Marangoni compartilha o apartamento em que trabalha com o também designer João Lavieri –eles trabalharam juntos no coletivo de artistas Colletivo– e com o ilustrador João Ruas. O prédio, misto de residencial e comercial, tem uma vizinhança improvável: os artistas dividem paredes com o consulado do Panamá na cidade. Quando mudou-se para São Paulo, Marangoni dividia o tempo entre trabalhos de design e tatuagem, hobby que virou sua única profissão há pouco menos de dois anos, em novembro de 2011.
